Snowfall Predicted in Parts of J&K
Srinagar, 14 Jan: A weak Western Disturbance (WD) is expected to affect Jammu and Kashmir in the next 48 hours, potentially bringing light snowfall to higher areas, officials stated.
According to the Meteorological Centre in Srinagar, this weak WD will likely impact the region between January 15 and 16, with light snowfall expected in areas like Sonamarg and its surroundings.
“The weather will largely remain dry across the region until January 20,” a MeT spokesperson said.
Another wet spell is possible around January 20-21.
Meanwhile, night temperatures showed slight improvement under overcast skies but remained below freezing, causing severe cold conditions across the Kashmir valley on Wednesday.
In Srinagar, the night temperature was recorded at -4.2°C between Tuesday and Wednesday, up from -5.1°C the previous night. This was 2.2°C below the normal for the city during this time of year, according to the MeT office.
Pahalgam remained the coldest location in the valley, with a low of -7.8°C compared to -8.4°C the previous night. This was 1.9°C below normal for the tourist destination in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district.
In Gulmarg, temperatures rose slightly, reaching -6.2°C from -6.5°C the day before. This was 1.6°C above normal for the ski resort in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district.
Kupwara recorded a low of -4.7°C, up from -5.5°C the previous night, but it was 2.2°C below the average for the district during this season.
Kokernag recorded -3.4°C for the second consecutive day, staying slightly below normal for the area.
At Qazigund, along the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway, the night temperature was -5.6°C, an improvement from -6.4°C the previous night, but still 2.6°C below the normal for the region, the MeT office added.
