J&K Education Minister Shares Important Update on Winter Vacation Extension
Srinagar, Feb 27: The Jammu and Kashmir government is set to hold a crucial meeting tomorrow to assess the possibility of extending winter vacations for primary and upper primary classes following fresh snowfall across the Valley.
With schools scheduled to reopen on March 1, 2025, parents and students are anxiously awaiting the government’s decision, especially given the cold wave gripping Kashmir.
Education Minister Sakina Itoo, speaking to Greater Kashmir, confirmed that the government is closely monitoring the weather conditions before making a final call.
“We will review the situation until tomorrow and take input from Deputy Commissioners regarding the accumulation of snow. The decision will be based on weather forecasts and ground reports,” she stated.
However, she clarified that any potential extension would be limited to younger students.
“If necessary, the government will consider extending winter vacations only for primary and upper primary classes. Higher classes, from 10th grade onwards, will resume as scheduled,” the minister added.
The recent spell of heavy rain and snowfall has raised concerns among parents, who argue that resuming classes in such harsh conditions could be unsafe for young children.
“The temperatures have dropped significantly, and sending kids out in this weather isn’t ideal. The administration should take a decision similar to Ladakh, where vacations were extended,” said Asima Bhat, a concerned parent.
Many students also echoed similar sentiments. Muntazir Gulzar, a Class 8 student, expressed his worry: “Walking to school in this snow is really difficult. Even public transport is not fully operational in some areas.”
