Colleges in Kashmir Set to Reopen After Winter Break; 10th, 12th Students Ready for Exams

Srinagar, Feb 14, 2025 – After spending nearly two months wrapped in the chilly grip of winter, degree colleges across Kashmir are finally opening their doors again. Starting this Saturday, classrooms will once more be filled with students, as the long winter vacation officially comes to an end.

Back in December, the Higher Education Department had announced a 50-day winter break for colleges located in the snow-covered winter zones of the Kashmir division. Students had packed their bags and headed home as the cold set in. The holidays began on December 27, 2024, and stretched all the way to February 14, 2025.

Colleges in the summer zones of Jammu, however, had a shorter winter break. Their doors were shut for only ten days, from January 1 to January 10, 2025.

But now, the quiet college corridors in Kashmir will come back to life. Students, eager yet a little anxious, are preparing to step into their classrooms once again. For many, the break was a mix of enjoying time at home and the pressure of upcoming exams.

Over two lakh students, studying in 10th and 12th classes, are getting ready to sit for their board exams. Their first papers are scheduled for tomorrow, marking an important day for families across the region. Books are being dusted off, last-minute revisions are in full swing, and parents are making sure their children are well-rested for the big day.

Schools in Kashmir and the winter areas of Jammu will take a bit longer to reopen. The School Education Department had earlier said that classes for younger children (up to 5th standard) will start from March 1, 2025, after their break, which began on December 10, 2024. Students from 6th to 12th standards had started their holidays a little later, from December 16, 2024, and they too will return on March 1, 2025.

Teachers of Government High Schools and Higher Secondary Schools, however, have already returned to their respective schools from February 10, 2025. They have been making all the necessary arrangements to ensure that the board exams for 10th, 11th, and 12th class students go smoothly.

With the winter slowly loosening its grip and students returning to their books, the valley is once again preparing for the familiar routine of education and exams.
