Winter Vacation Extended, But Kashmir University Forces Exams in Freezing Cold

Srinagar, Feb 28: The winter vacations for schools in Jammu and Kashmir have been extended, with all institutions now set to reopen on March 7, announced Sakina Itoo.

The decision comes in response to the ongoing cold wave and difficult weather conditions across the region.

The schools were originally scheduled to reopen on March 1st after long winter break but now will resume from March 7th

Several parts of J&K are experiencing snowfall and rain, which is expected to continue until late tonight. Adding to the challenge, another Western Disturbance is likely to affect the region on March 3, bringing fresh snowfall and more disruptions.

Despite the worsening weather, Kashmir University (KU) and JKBOSE have refused to postpone their scheduled exams, forcing students to sit in freezing temperatures. Meanwhile, Islamia College of Science and Technology and IUST have already postponed their exams, recognizing the difficulties faced by students.

Many students have raised concerns over the lack of basic facilities, including no heating arrangements in exam centers. “How can they expect us to sit through exams in such extreme cold? Even schools have extended vacations, but KU and JKBOSE refuse to show the same consideration,” said a student appearing for exams at KU.

Parents have also criticized the university’s decision. “The roads are covered in snow, transport is unreliable, and temperatures are low. If schools can delay reopening, why can’t universities and JKBOSE do the same?” questioned a worried parent.

With the weather set to worsen in the coming days, students and parents are urging Kashmir University to reconsider their stance. Many believe the authorities are failing to prioritize student safety and well-being.
